A powerful magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck Poso, Central Sulawesi, on Thursday evening (July 24, 2025) at 8:06 p.m. local time, according to Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). The quake’s epicenter was located inland at 2.01°S and 120.78°E, at a depth of 10 kilometers. BMKG confirmed that the quake posed no tsunami threat.
The Central Sulawesi Provincial Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) reported that the hardest-hit areas were the subdistricts of South Pamona and South East Pamona.
In Tokilo village, four houses were severely damaged and 21 others suffered minor damage. In Tindoli village, the damage was more extensive: 10 houses were destroyed, 70 sustained lighter damage, and a church and kindergarten were also affected. Pendolo village in Pamona Selatan reported one lightly damaged home.
As of the latest update, 596 residents from Tokilo, 887 from Tindoli, and 528 from Tolambo have evacuated to temporary shelters, including open fields and village halls. Four people reportedly sustained minor injuries.
Authorities have set up emergency tents and continue evacuation and data collection efforts. Immediate needs for displaced residents include tents, ready-to-eat meals, medicine, baby supplies, and generators.
Since the initial quake, 96 aftershocks have been recorded in the region. Residents are urged to remain alert and follow instructions from local emergency personnel. ***
